You Will Never Do Better Than Me
You will undoubtedly meet someone else
someday, and he will love you
as much as anyone can. He will
be kind and care for you,
support you when times are tough, listen to shitty stories
about your crazy boss and your dumbass
coworkers, and drive you
to your doctor’s appointment
when your roommate bails.
He will share with you some of the interests I did
and not share others which we had bonded over.
But still, he will always be willing to try yoga,
with the appropriate amount of nagging
to motivate him.
He will get along with your family,
and he will be so very handsome
that your mother won’t be able to stop
herself from hitting on him
right in front of your dad.
He will have flaws,
he will get frustrated,
he will at times be difficult to read,
or otherwise he will always be evidently readable
and it will annoy the hell out of you.
At the end of stressful days
he will hold you in his arms
while you mutter into his chest,
with work still caked in your hair,
and the TV show you found together
playing unwatched in the background.
And when you decide you’d prefer to stay
maybe then you’ll understand
why you’ll never do better than me.
Because when you finally find him
and fall in love again
the only thing that will have changed
will be you.
